June’s Racing Hondas races around the Brands Hatch Indy circuit were a pair of nail-biters – expect two more this Sunday (7 Sept).
Kevin Talbot and Philip Wright shared the spoils at the historic Kent circuit in the spring following a spectacular clash at Druids Bend. Three months on, however, both find themselves chasing Will Self in the Class A title fight.
Self arrives at Brands off the back of four straight wins in his Civic EG, though his advantage over Wright (Civic EP3) is just 10 points – with each race worth 15 points, the gap is far from safe.
Meanwhile, Liam Collins (Integra DC2) looks overdue a victory after taking pole with a record lap last time out at Oulton Park, where he climbed to third in the standings.
Collins also holds the Brands Indy qualifying and race lap records at 51.338s (84.70mph) and 51.621s (84.24mph) and it was only an opportunistic move by Talbot into Paddock Hill Bend that arguably denied him of the win in June…
Talbot’s win that day was his third in as many meetings and helped him extend his then-championship lead but two tricky outings since have seen him tumble to fourth. He knows Brands marks an opportunity to get back on terms with Self and co…
Oulton Park’s rounds saw Tommy Knight (Civic EK) emerge as a genuine contender, challenging for victory in both races. He, along with fellow home hope James Alford (Civic EG), will be eager to impress at Brands.
Another name to watch is James Kiff, who claimed a breakthrough podium with second place at Oulton. Quick on his Brands debut in June, his Integra DC2 is only getting stronger and more podiums could be on the cards.
Leading the standings outright is Londoner Dan Thackeray who continues to dominate Class B in his Civic EP3. He’s been beaten only twice in 10 rounds – both times by Motion Motorsport team-mate Ryan Cunningham, including here in June and again at Oulton.
Expect Ben Sharpe Racing pair Sam Linssner and Lewis Barker, and Essex pair, Kinetic Motorsport’s Sammy Mileham and 4Tag Racing’s Spencer Fortag (lone Civic FN2) to keep them under pressure.
In Class C, it’s another Essex driver, Matt Rowling who leads the way in his EP3, a car well-suited to the Indy circuit. Rival Callum Houchen (FAW Motorsport FN2) will take heart, though, from his narrow victory at Oulton as their battle continues.
